What a skill is
A skill is a folder with one required file,SKILL.md, and any files it refers to. SKILL.md starts with two lines of frontmatter and then the instructions in Markdown:
description matters most. Agents read it to decide when the skill applies, so write it as the moment to use the skill, in the words a person would use.
Reference material that is long or changes on its own, such as a template or a list, goes in a separate file in the folder and is linked from SKILL.md. Keep SKILL.md short enough to read in one go.
Write or import a skill
Open Skills in ApexGenius.- New skill opens the editor: a name, the description, the instructions. ApexGenius detects the apps the instructions use and lists them beside the editor.
- Import .zip takes a skill folder you already have, for example one written for Claude Code or Codex. ApexGenius keeps the files and reads the frontmatter.
- Each save is a version. The skill page lists them, with who saved each one: you, an agent through the gateway, or an import. An older version can be downloaded.
- Download .zip gives you the folder back, ready to drop into an agent’s own skills directory if you ever want a local copy.
How agents load a skill
Every agent connected to ApexGenius sees your skills as MCP prompts, so there is nothing to install per agent. In Claude Code and Codex, type/ to see them. In Claude and ChatGPT, ask the agent to list its prompts or name the skill in your request. The skill page’s Use in row shows, per agent, where the skill would sit if you also kept a local copy.
An agent reads the skill when a task matches its description, then follows the instructions with the apps it can reach through ApexGenius. A skill grants no access on its own: the apps it names still have to be connected, and the agent’s access level still applies.
