# Skills

> Write an instruction once as a skill in ApexGenius and every agent you connect follows it: what a skill is, how to write or import one, how agents load it.

A skill is a set of instructions an agent follows for one kind of task: how you write a Jira story, how a monthly client report is built, what a Slack post in your workspace should look like. In ApexGenius a skill lives in your account, so the same instructions reach Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and every other agent you connect. Change it once and every agent follows the new version.

## What a skill is

A skill is a folder with one required file, `SKILL.md`, and any files it refers to. `SKILL.md` starts with two lines of frontmatter and then the instructions in Markdown:

```markdown theme={"system"}
---
name: monthly-client-report
description: Build the monthly client report from Search Console and GA4. Use when a client asks how their site did this month.
---
# Monthly client report
1. Read the last 28 days against the 28 before from Search Console.
2. ...
```

The `description` matters most. Agents read it to decide when the skill applies, so write it as the moment to use the skill, in the words a person would use.

Reference material that is long or changes on its own, such as a template or a list, goes in a separate file in the folder and is linked from `SKILL.md`. Keep `SKILL.md` short enough to read in one go.

## Write or import a skill

Open **Skills** in ApexGenius.

* **New skill** opens the editor: a name, the description, the instructions. ApexGenius detects the apps the instructions use and lists them beside the editor.
* **Import .zip** takes a skill folder you already have, for example one written for Claude Code or Codex. ApexGenius keeps the files and reads the frontmatter.
* Each save is a version. The skill page lists them, with who saved each one: you, an agent through the gateway, or an import. An older version can be downloaded.
* **Download .zip** gives you the folder back, ready to drop into an agent's own skills directory if you ever want a local copy.

Skills are private to your account. Shipped skills, the ones ApexGenius provides for apps such as Salesforce or Notion, show in the same list and cannot be edited.

## How agents load a skill

Every agent connected to ApexGenius sees your skills as MCP prompts, so there is nothing to install per agent. In Claude Code and Codex, type `/` to see them. In Claude and ChatGPT, ask the agent to list its prompts or name the skill in your request. The skill page's **Use in** row shows, per agent, where the skill would sit if you also kept a local copy.

An agent reads the skill when a task matches its description, then follows the instructions with the apps it can reach through ApexGenius. A skill grants no access on its own: the apps it names still have to be connected, and the agent's access level still applies.

## Skills an agent writes

An agent can save a skill for you through the gateway, the way it saves a note to [memory](https://docs.apexgenius.ai/guides/memory.md). It shows up in Skills with the agent's name on the version. Review it there like any other skill; delete it if it is not what you meant.

## Delete a skill

The skill page's **Danger** row deletes the skill and every version. Every agent loses it at once, so download a copy first if you might want it back.
