# Memory

> One memory for every agent you use: notes your agents read before they work and save as they learn, kept in folders you can see, edit and tidy.

Memory is a folder of notes that belongs to your account, not to any one agent. An agent reads it before it works on your clients, projects or preferences, and saves what it learns as it goes. Switch from Claude to Cursor to ChatGPT and each one starts from the same notes.

## What is in it

* Notes are Markdown files under `memory/`. Each starts with a one-line description in its frontmatter.
* Folders group them: `memory/clients/acme/`, `memory/projects/pre-op-intake/`, or whatever fits your work. A folder's `README.md` says what it is for.
* `memory/MEMORY.md` is the index. ApexGenius builds it from the notes on every read, so it is always current and cannot be edited by hand.
* Every save is a version with who saved it: you, an agent, or an import. An older version can be restored.

Memory holds text only. A note that is too large, or an account that is full, is refused with a message that says so.

## How agents use it

Agents reach memory through seven tools on the ApexGenius connection. They cost no credits.

| What the agent does | Tool |
| - | - |
| Read the index, a note, or an older version | `apex_fs_read` |
| List a folder | `apex_fs_list` |
| Find a note by words | `apex_fs_search` |
| Save a note, or several at once | `apex_fs_write` |
| Change a few lines of a note | `apex_fs_edit` |
| Rename or move a note or folder | `apex_fs_move` |
| Archive a note or folder | `apex_fs_delete` |

The connection's instructions tell every agent to read `memory/MEMORY.md` before work about your clients or projects, to save what it learns as a short note in the right folder, and to tell you where the note went. The shipped skill **Remember with ApexGenius memory** carries the full method, and you can say it in a prompt too: "check memory first" or "save that to memory under Acme".

A password, key or token blocks a save. Memory is for what you know, never for what unlocks something.

## The Memory page

Open **Memory** in ApexGenius.

* The rail shows all notes, the unfiled ones, your folders and `MEMORY.md`.
* Each note shows its description line and who saved it last. Open a note to read or edit it; a conflict warns you if an agent saved in between.
* **New folder** and the folder's **Settings** set up a folder and its purpose line. Move notes between folders from the list.
* **Versions** on a note shows its history and restores an older one.
* Archiving a note hides it from agents and keeps its history. Undo is in the toast right after. Archived notes are removed for good only from here, never by an agent.

## Where agents may read and write

Today every connected agent with access to the ApexGenius connection reads and writes the whole memory. Per-agent and per-folder access is planned and is not available yet, so do not keep anything in memory that one of your agents must not see.
